Book Review (4/5) – Utopia (Thomas More)

Whilst this is no Charles Dickens or Jonathan Swift, Thomas More is certainly up there with the best of the political satires. Although it could be called rambling if it weren’t so short, More addresses some particularly interesting topics such as how countries wage war and what is the point of money is. It’s left entirely to the reader to come to their own conclusion about whether this communist paradise is actually possible (it’s not). It’s a shame satire seems to have become less common in modern times – politics would be a lot better with more subtle, satirical critiques. They tend to make you think more.
