Yet another excellent work of historical fiction from Robert Harris. His mechanism of using secondary participants in major historical events to tell the story from their perspective is clever. It allows him a wide degree of artistic license whilst still using true facts and including famous characters, Chamberlain and Hitler in this case. Knowing the general outcome of the story before you start it (because it is based on true events) but not what will happen to the main characters is quite a compelling literary device.
