A detailed knowledge of Russian history and literature is assumed. Nothing is explained so if you don’t know then quite a lot of the references will be lost. However, that doesn’t really matter for the main point of the book/essay, which is explained in the first chapters. The rest just elaborates and explains the theory further.

Hedgehog and fox is an interesting way to group people and their world view and I can easily see how it could be applied to modern day politics in particular. It certainly would’ve benefited from a more mainstream context than 18th and 19th Century Russian history.
