The world has moved to a rental model - access is cheaper and content available on demand. But what happens to your data when you get locked out, stop paying or the service goes down? Better to keep a copy and work locally.

Balancing security, privacy and convenience is not easy. I’ve spent quite a lot of time figuring out how to configure my various computer systems with this goal in mind.

The tech companies need to apply good engineering processes to how they are developing their social policy, in public.
